Position Title: Conductor and Artistic Director
Reports to: NTSO Board of Directors

Job Summary:
The Artistic Director/Conductor is responsible for the musical leadership, artistic vision, and operational development of the New Texas Symphony Orchestra (NTSO). This individual will work closely with the NTSO Board of Directors, operational staff, and volunteers to uphold the orchestra’s mission of providing high-quality musical experiences while fostering community engagement. This role requires a balance of artistic excellence, organizational leadership, and a passion for community-driven music-making within the NTSO’s annual budget framework.

Essential Job Functions

Artistic Leadership

  • Conduct the NTSO in rehearsals and performances, ensuring artistic excellence and cohesion.

  • Plan and lead rehearsals, providing coaching on interpretation, phrasing, bowing, and practice techniques to enhance musicianship and ensemble quality.

  • Design and implement a thematic concert season, including regular concerts, special events, chamber music programs, and educational/outreach activities.

  • Finalize the season schedule by January 15 each year to facilitate marketing, public relations, and promotional efforts.

  • Collaborate with guest artists and other arts organizations in the Dallas/Fort Worth area to enhance the orchestra’s offerings and visibility.

Community Engagement

  • Actively engage with the Dallas/Fort Worth arts community to build relationships, recruit musicians, and expand the orchestra’s audience base.

  • Develop outreach programs that reflect the NTSO’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring accessibility for all community members.

  • Represent the NTSO at community events, fostering partnerships and raising the orchestra’s profile.

Organizational Development

  • Work with the Board of Directors to establish and achieve long-term artistic and organizational goals.

  • Collaborate with operational staff and volunteers to ensure smooth execution of concerts and events.

  • Adhere to the NTSO’s annual budget and provide input on financial planning related to artistic programming.

Qualifications

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in music or music education (required).

    • Master’s Degree in Conducting or equivalent experience (preferred).

  • Experience:

    • Minimum of five years of orchestral conducting experience, preferably with community or volunteer ensembles.

    • Demonstrated ability to inspire and lead musicians of varying skill levels.

  • Skills:

    • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.

    • Knowledge of the unique challenges and opportunities within community/civic arts organizations.

  • Other Requirements:

    • Ability to pass a background check.
